TURKEY TAIL GRAIN SPAWN AND DOWELS
 
This native mushroom is prized not for culinary purposes, but rather for its active compounds. People around the world are flocking to the healing powers of the Turkey Tail fungus (Trametes versicolor). Instead of paying big bucks for fancy extracts, you can grow a great supply of premium quality turkey tail mushrooms at home - and know exactly where they came from. This is a native strain from New Zealand with great vigor and large fruit bodies. It is easy to make your own tea from fresh or dried turkey tails. Just gently simmer them in water for 30 mins to an hour. Tumeric and black pepper are popular additions to increase the potency of this medicine.
 
Can be grown on sawdust blocks or wood logs. One kilogram of grain spawn is enough to inoculate about four straw bags or sawdust blocks. Easy to grow. Vigorous.
 
SPAWN:
Fully colonised and healthy grain spawn of our selected favourite strain of Turkey Tail mushroom culture. This strain performs well in New Zealand conditions and is equally as happy on logs outdoors as it is on indoor sawdust / woodchip blocks. One kilogram of spawn is enough to inoculate approximately four sawdust or woodchip blocks (advanced method).

DOWELS:
Fully colonised, high quality dowel plugs. These dowels are perfect for inoculating fresh cut logs of deciduous trees (although turkey tail grows on almost any kind of wood!)
 
Simply drill some holes slightly deeper and slightly wider than the dowels, spaced about 15cm apart all around the log, tap them in with a hammer and seal the holes with melted wax. A log generally requires 15-50 dowels, depending on its size.
 
Logs take a year or so to begin fruiting, but after that, they will continue to produce several crops of mushrooms per year (when weather conditions are right) for up to five or six years. They are generally very low maintenance. A humid, shady corner of the garden is perfect for them.
 
Dowels are 8mm wide so a 8.5mm to 9mm drill bit is ideal for drilling the holes for them. Comes with instructions or check out our tips and advice page for more info.
